Who we are & what we do

Elvaston Parish Council comprises four areas within the district of South Derbyshire, approximately 5 miles southeast of Derby. Elvaston, Thulston and Ambaston are all small rural hamlets with approximately 250 houses in total. Boulton Moor and Buttercup Leys are the newest areas of the parish, comprising mainly housing estate and bordering Derby City to the northwest

One of the most prominent landmarks within the parish is Elvaston Castle & Country Park.

The parish of Elvaston is home to many beautiful countryside walks, a traditional rural country pub which has a small pantry shop attached, the very picturesque St Bartholomews Church within the grounds of Elvaston Castle Country Park and the associated church village hall which is where Parish Council Meetings are held; and is also available for private hire.

The Parish Council:
Parish Councils are the first tier of local government and the closest to the community they serve. They are elected bodies with discretionary powers and rights to represent their communities and provide services for them. The number of councillors is fixed by the local District or Borough Council.

Elvaston is served by 9 parish councillors, the clerk and a lengthsman. The Clerk is a paid officer of the council and it is the Clerk's responsibility to action decisions made by the Parish Council. The lengthsman is also a paid officer of the council, line managed by the Clerk and responsible for the general upkeep of the parish including litter picking, reporting faults and minor maintenance where applicable.

Committees/Advisory Groups

Our committees have specific tasks and can have delegated powers. Elvaston Parish Council currently has committees, which are also known as Advisory Groups:

  • Finance - meet 4 times a year in July, November, January, March/April to ensure the budget forecast is correct, to set the budget and precept request for the forthcoming year.
  • Personnel/Employment - meet as required to discuss staffing arrangements
  • Allotments - meet at least quarterly as part of the full council meeting to discuss any issues

These groups make recommendations for approval at full council meeting, which are duly implemented.

Our Staff

We have a dedicated Parish Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer. The Clerk can be contacted by phone or email. If you have a problem to report, this can also be done online.

We also have two dedicated Parish Lengthsmen who are responsible for the general upkeep of all parish areas, including litter picking, minor maintenance and the reporting of faults and issues.
